Explaining Secant Piled Walls

Installation of interlocking primary and secondary concrete piles using continuous flight auger technology forms a secant pile retaining wall; the secondary piles are cut partially on both sides of the primary piles to form a continuous structure.

A secant pile wall is reinforced with steel bars or beams drilled into the ground. This retaining wall is required to resist groundwater.

At Alpha Piling, experts and skilled engineers have constructed secant piled walls for various projects across the UK and can do the same for you.

Common Uses of Secant Piled Walls

  • They are used for slope stabilisation and where water has been cut off for drainage channels.
  • They support and allow for excavation.
  • Secant pile walls are also used in constructing underground and basement car parks.
  • They are used where diaphragm walls are not constructed due to ground obstructions.
  • They are also used to support wing walls.

Fields of Application of Secant Retaining Wall

There are many fields of application where a secant retaining wall is installed, which may include the following:

  • It is used for constructing new basements, especially in urban areas.
  • It provides extra support to highways for slope stability.
  • It is used to support horizontal abutments of a bridge
  • Secant retaining wall is also constructed for cut-off barriers and to support bulkhead

Key Aspects:

  1. Rig loadings: 6–110 tonnes
  2. Average pile diameter: 600–1,200mm
  • Secant piled walls using CFA – diameters range: 450mm – 1200mm.
  • Secant piled walls using bored piles with segmental casing – diameter range: 450mm – 1500mm.
  • Secant piled walls using turbo jet – diameters range: 600mm – 1200mm.

How Are Secant Pile Walls Constructed?

  • Secant pile wall is constructed using CFA technology containing reinforced piles filled with columns made of low-strength material of 1-3 MPa mortar or concrete with bentonite.
  • These columns are spaced around 620-670mm for a 470-500mm drilling diameter.
  • Though it ensures groundwater resistance, it is not a permanent water resisting solution.
  • The columns have a combined strength of 10-20 MPa and a binding time of 56 days.
  • In this way, a secant wall not only ensures long-term water-resistance but also proves to be beneficial for deep excavations.

Benefits of a Secant Pile

  • It is used as a permanent or temporary earth-retaining structure; it prevents soil movement on the retained side.
  • Secant pile retaining walls also prevent groundwater ingress in regions with a high water table.
  • It can carry and withstand the weight of surrounding structures.
  • During construction, it does not create noise or vibration, making it suitable for areas where vibration can be problematic.
  • Secant retaining walls can be easily constructed in various soil conditions, such as soft layers of rock, cohesive soils and granular soils.
  • Compared to sheet piles, a secant retaining wall increases wall rigidity.
  • A secant pile retaining wall is also an economical solution for short-term water retention.
